This place is good !! Very surprised after having trouble in this area trying to find some good Mexican . the carne asada plate was the highlight of what we had . the rice and beans are also good ...

We walked in to another place nearby, craving good Mexican and we waked out after not liking the atmosphere, and the bathrooms. (A good indicator) so we came here seeing a full parking lot. (Generally a good sign) We ordered and my daughters meal came rather fast. Then we waited, and waited.... then after 40 min. we got the hot plates but no toppings, and then had to get up and ask for our tortillas. Got checked on once and had to get up to get our bill and pay. The food was good, big portions. I didnt care for either of their salsa. I would say... skip this one.

After the El Cancun on Carowinds closed recently, I was heartbroken. Where in the Queen City could I possibly get a burrito and a Corona? I mean, Charlotte's totally a desert of Mexican food. Horrors! I'm kidding, of course. We have a million of the places. Most of them are so much like each other, they might be a chain! El Cancun is one of the better ones with the usual warm chips and cold salsa. Lots of booze options, including the ubiquitous Corona and also Dos Equis and margaritas and the like. I've taken to the Chorizo Pollo. A large flattened and grilled chicken breast topped with crumbled chorizo and a large dose of white queso. It will come with guacamole salad unless you ask for rice and beans. Is it authentic? Hell no! Is it tasty and inexpensive? Very much yes.

Now here's an Americanized Mexican restaurant that knows how to handle the frantic bombardment of weekend diners. The waiting area has got to be a migraine for the workers, as a crowd of people stand in their way. It's not as if it's the customers' faults though either...there's no place to wait. You really need to think about getting the handheld buzzers to tell your customers when a table is ready. I was quite surprised at the food here. I had been here a couple of times before...and thought it was some serious...meh...whatever. Not this time though...I asked the waiter for his advice and took it. I was crazy apprehensive since I prefer traditional dishes (and restaurants) and rarely order things like a steak burrito...but man...he was right. The steak burrito was really good. I couldn't believe how well the steak was cooked...it just sort of melted in my mouth. Let's not forget the margarita...top shelf...with Grand Marnier. Okay...yes...I do realize it would be almost impossibe to screw this up...but they not only nailed it...they made me hand the keys to my wife. Nice El Cancun...nice! This place is tight quarters people, so if you're averse to a swarm of boisterous melee, you may want to opt for an old folks home. Try: Spending some money and getting a top shelf margarita on the rocks Avoid: The ten second rule...probably not a good idea!

The service and food were both good, but not impressive. The food was very bland. I'm not the type that loves spicy Mexican food, but some seasoning would greatly improve the food here. As other reviewers have said, the salsa isn't great and it's very watery. The queso dip was tasty, so that was a plus.

Yuck! Just yuck. This is NOT in any way, shape, form, taste, or presentation authentic Mexican food. I grew up in Southern California and I have never had anything quite like this -- not in a restaurant, nor in a private Mexican home. I don't even know what you would call it. This is going to be a long one, so I'll give you the TLDR version: cheap, bland, reheated cafeteria quality. No love in this one. I've driven by this place and Tequila's practically across the street for three years trying to figure out which one looked better, but wary of both. They both get very crowded quite regularly, so it was a draw from the outside. I usually drive up to Pineville for my Mexican fix, but last night we needed it...bad. So, El Cancun won out just because the parking lot had more cars in it. Chips and two red salsas were immediately brought to the table with no explanation of either salsa. The plain red was a standard cooked salsa that was somewhat watery and not hot at all. I expected the second salsa to be hot, but instead it had some dark specks in it (black pepper?), a weird flavor I couldn't quite identify and long slices of onions throughout. It was even more watery. It was not hot either. I don't know what it was supposed to be, but I would have loved something spicier or maybe a green salsa. The chips were tasty, hot and crispy however. Fresh? Not sure. I think not likely though considering the rest of the meal. We started with drinks: a margarita for me and Negro Modelo for my companion. Decent selection of mexican beers as well as the standard domestics. The margaritas come in three sizes with a top shelf and non-alcoholic option. No specialty (gimmick) margaritas listed, but they do call them "ritas" on their menu for hipster cred, I guess. I ordered a small blended and was asked if I wanted lime flavor and salt. Um, yes? The very frothy "rita" was served in a piña colada glass without a lime and a minimum of salt. At least the tequila to (clearly) commercial margarita mix ratio wasn't too bad, but it may have been lacking triple sec. Why so frothy? I dunno. Oh well. The menu was promising with a wide variety of Mexican favorites, including a section for vegetarians. I almost went for the molé, but decided I had to have a tamale. Molé is more complex, so I like to see if they can pull off a red sauce well first, so I ordered the #8 combo which was an enchilada and a tamale with rice and beans. My companions ordered enchiladas rancheros and jalepeno popper nachos (she's 12). Jalepeno popper nachos consist of chips smothered with melted mexican blend cheeses topped with deep fried jalapeno poppers. The poppers were dark indicating they were pre-cooked frozen reheated in the deep fryer. They were served with a creamy guacamole that tasted like sour cream and had dark green specks in it that looked like it was made from a spice packet. I prefer guacamole to be chunkier with actual chunks of avocado and tomato. Enchiladas rancheros came with the sauce in a bowl separate from the enchiladas which did not appear to have been cooked in a sauce. My understanding of rancheros is that the enchiladas should have been smothered in a red sauce. According to the menu, the dark brown (almost black) sauce in the bowl was supposedly a molé, (wouldn't that be enchiladas con molé then?) but it was too burnt to identify what kind of molé it was. I don't mean smoked as chipotlé; no, really it tasted of char like someone left it simmering on the stove too long and burned the bottom of the pot. The enchiladas were stuffed with ground beef. That's right. Ground beef. What more can I say? The #8 combo came covered with the same ground beef that was stuffed in the enchiladas. It was also covered with an unidentifiable creamy sauce over both the enchilada and the exceptionally small tamale, which had a little bit of shredded pork (I think; not really sure) and ground beef. Very odd. Let me tell you a little bit about this ground beef. It was very loose and flavorless as if it'd been boiled in water and had a very mushy consistency. The masa of the tamale was mushy as well. The spanish rice was bland, but not overcooked. The canned refried beans were okay with asadero cheese melted on top and not crusty (which is unfortunately an all too common oversight for Mexican restaurants). The sides weren't spectacular, but I guess I shouldn't expect that when the entrees are so unbelievably bad. If you had no teeth or taste buds, you'd be fine here. If you like latin dishes, but can't handle spice or heat, you'd probably love this. This is fare for old folks homes. This is not fresh food cooked authentically, but rather frozen/canned/pre-prepared food reheated and slopped on a plate. The kitchen and the bar are really phoning it in. The only upside is that it was cheap...real cheap. $36 for two dinners with two drinks and an appetizer. Service was adequate.

Service was friendly and helpful, but that's not going to save this place. Wife's Margarita was served in a pina colada glass. This was just a prelude to our following experience. Chips and salsa were put on the table. At least the chips were warm. There were two flavors of salsa, Bland, and watered down. Daughter - [Jalapeno Popper nachos ] this was chips with cheese melted over them with 6 jalapeno poppers on top, Not a serving of nachos. Guacamole was bland and was so white it looked like it had been blended with sour creme. Dark green specks in it made it look like it was made from a seasoning packet and not traditionally. Wife -[Number 8 combo plate, Enchilada & Tamale with Rice and beans.] Everything was bland and flavorless. Stuffed with Ground beef, as well as topped with the same ground beef. Tamale was small, mushy. Me - [ Beef Enchiladas Rancheros] Enchiladas were stuffed with Ground beef. Mole sauce was black and overcooked and a skin had formed on the top of it.. Every time I tried to cut apart a part of an enchilada, it fell apart. It was like they were only made with half of the corn tortilla wrapped over the top of the enchilada. As for the Beef used in both of the dishes my Wife and I ordered. It was flavorless. I swear there couldn't have been any seasoning in it and it was no doubt the lowest quality meat you could possibly imagine being used. I remarked to my wife while we were eating. This is retirement home food. It's made to look like Mexican cuisine, but has no flavor, not even spice.

Good food... not the worst nor the best but good nonetheless. The parking lot is small so be prepared the park at the paint store next door after 5pm if you eat dinner there. Great prices for lunch (under 5 bucks or so) and good prices for dinner (around 8-10 bucks). Very friendly, courteous, and upbeat staff. Their saving grace is their patio. Very good sized patio... I'd suggest sitting out there during summer hours. I have fond memories of skipping my afternoon classes at Winthrop and going to El Cancun and drinking margaritas on the patio.... the best 7 years of my life... Overall, very good food, service, and prices. Thumbs up!

The food is good. I wouldn't call it the most authentic mexican food. The mild salsa tastes like Raghu sauce with salsa mixed in it, but my wife absolutely loves it. I like the spicy salsa which is a little better. The beer is great and cold, the margaritas are good. The burritos cristinas is good. It took all of 7 min from order to food on the table for 5 people! I know I'll be dragged here again as my wife loves the food ... Bring on the cold beer!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
